Treading Water
© 1999 by Jennifer Farwell

Where were you
when the moonlight shone
when my ghosts were gone
when my war was won, and
Where were you
when I couldn't see
when I tried to be
when I struggled free, and
Where were you
when I fell behind
when I looked to find
when I went blind
Where were you
when I was treading water?

Where was I
when the day was bright
when the world was right
when you slept at night, and
Where was I
when you watched the rain
when you saw the pain
here we go again, and
Where was I
when the sun was high
when I heard you cry
when I felt us die
Where was I
when you were treading water?

Where was love
when I met your kiss
when I fell amiss
into this abyss, and
Where was love
when we needed trust
when we knew we must
all we had was lust, and
Where was love
when the sky was gray
when we turned away
when you left that day
Where was love
when we were treading water?
